My Poke & Plant Plan

My plan for this Sunday afternoon was to plant the
vast quantity of sunflower seeds
I have been collecting.

The last couple of years I have grown sunflowers for the
Farmers Market.

The full package of seeds never gets sown.

Plus I had a few odds and end sunflower seeds that I had bought to try, but never got around to it.

I have had this grand plan to plant all of these sunflower seeds randomly on our back acreage.

The bees would love them!

Plus wouldn't this field look pretty all a bloom with sunflowers?

I though the easiest way to plant all the seeds,
would be poking a hole in the ground,
dropping in the seed,
then adding some dirt on top.

I found a piece of rebar to do the poking.

I tried to talk the pipeliner into doing this part.
But he was busy cleaning his garage.

I started poking and planting.

Five hundred some seeds is a lot of holes to poke and plant!

The planting was coming along pretty good.

Then the skies turned to this.

The rains halted the process for the rest of the day.

Thats okay,
the garden sure could use a good soaking.

Hopefully tomorrow I can finish my
poke and plant plan!

I will let you know when the sunflowers start sprouting!

Happy Sunday!

Liz

  1. I can't wait to see this in bloom! We spent the day outside also, the yard is "done" for adding the rest of the perennials plus we added a 4th red current. Yesterday was 2 trailer of wood for winter, I think I will rest when I go to work on Monday.....

  3. We had those mean looking skies for awhile this afternoon and then they just went away without giving us one drop of rain which we are needing right now.

Love your new home and I know from experience that those sunflowers will make your heart smile. We have a sunflower field at the deer camp that is about 2 acres....and it is beautiful when it's blooming!! I always take the grandbabies pics in the field and all that yellow makes a great backdrop. You'll be happy to have done all the hard work of planting come bloom time!!

  7. Your field of sunflowers is going to be amazing! Will you cut them all for the market or will you save a few for the birds? I love watching birds hanging on sunflowers.

  8. I planted some in the garden to cut for the farmers market. I am sure the birds will go crazy for all of the seeds too!

  10. That is a lot of sunflowers. They will be beautiful when they bloom. I planted some sunflowers this year and a squirrel dug them all up and ate the seeds. I tried again and he ate them again. So I had to plant some seeds indoors and then transplanted them after they came up.

  11. So anxious to see your field of sunflowers. It should be stunning. I had a couple come up last summer in my garden from feeding the birds and they were so beautiful, but I've never had much luck planting them from seeds. Can hardly wait to see yours.

    1. I have always loved to plant sunflowers. I sure hope most of these come up, because some of the seeds might be a few years old.
