My Christmas cactus is starting to bloom!
I really don't mind if its a few weeks early.
It just brings me great amounts of joy everytime a bud begins to form.
This Christmas cactus is extra special to me because it belonged to my grandmother.
She passed over 24 years ago!
Grandma followed all of the rules for making her cactus
"bloom filled" for Christmas.
It was the center of attention on its own special stand during
the Christmas season.
When my grandma passed I took on the responsibility
of caring for her prized cactus.
My treasured cactus has endured 5 moves, 3 kids picking at its leaves, one dog knocking it over and many forgotten watering's.
Today it is not as grand as it once was many years ago.
But every time it comes into blooms
I can feel the extra special presence of my grandma.
I hope I can keep grandmas Christmas cactus blooming for
seasons to come!
Liz
Love this! I don't do cactus very well, you should be proud you have kept this memory maker going.
ReplyDeleteIt makes me happy to think I have had this cactus so long!
DeleteYour cactus is beautiful!! I have the same cactus (really just a baby) in that shade that belonged to my mother. I also have a large cactus that has raspberry red blooms. Both my cactus bloomed and are finished now ... about a month before Christmas. I don't do anything to my cactus but water them and keep them in a sunny location ... I was hoping you were going to give us some tips on their proper care! I also take them outside in the summer and leave them there till about September. It seems to work since they both bloom every year. (I've had them for three years now.) Have a great week Liz!! Wendy x
ReplyDeleteI have another cactus that has those raspberry red blooms, its usually blooms around Thanksgiving. I used to put mine outside, but that is how the dog accident occured!
DeleteI had thought of getting a Christmas cactus this year but wasn't sure what to do with it once it stopped blooming so I left it at the store. But I just can't believe how old your cactus is. That is just amazing. Does it ever produce little baby plants? Maybe you could propagate it so that at the end of its lifespan, you will still have piece of the plant to carry on its legacy.
ReplyDeleteThey really aren't that hard to take care of. Yes this one gets new starts every once in awhile. I should try to start another plant. Thanks for the idea!
DeleteNice! Believe it or not, I have a couple Mother-in-Law Tongue plants that were originally my great-grandmother's from about 100 years ago!
ReplyDeleteNow that is really awesome!
DeleteThat is amazing that you have had it for so long! My mom has one too but it blooms at Thanksgiving instead.
ReplyDeleteI never really thought how old it was until the other day when a neighbor asked! I have a cactus that blooms at Thanksgiving too!
DeleteHow special is this plant Liz!!! My goodness!! This is just outstanding and a wonderful way to pass on Christmas magic! Maybe one day my beans will have some of my plants at their homes! Very special!!! Happy week to you! Nicole xoxo
ReplyDeleteI also have a cactus given to me by a neighbor who has since passed. I feel blessed to be trusted with these beauties!
DeleteWhat a special post! I would be so proud of myself if I would have kept the plant alive, like you did. Your grandma would be proud of you too! It is still pretty!
ReplyDeleteThanks! She would probably be amazed that it is still alive, after all I don't have the best of luck with house plants! lol..
DeleteWhat a beautiful cactus. I'm glad I found your blog today because I enjoyed reading this sweet post. I agree, your grandmother would be very proud of the way you've lovingly taken care of her plant. Blessings to you... :)
